An Opening

An art gallery. A food table to one side. ADELE, in a party dress, is standing, studying the paintings. She moves slowly from one to another.
ADELE
No. No, just doesn’t work.
BOYD ENTERS uncertainly. Looks at Adele, then around at the paintings.
ADELE
Unformed, unfocussed. Unbelievable. Unlovable.

BOYD
Me?

ADELE
Oh!

BOYD
Are you talking to me?

ADELE
No.

BOYD
Or about me?

ADELE
Why would I?

BOYD
That’s what I’m thinking. But then I’m thinking, why would you say those hard things about anyone?

ADELE
I didn’t realize I was speaking aloud.
A painting catches Boyd’s eye. He glances at it, then looks more carefully. Purses his lips, then turns back to Adele.
BOYD
Are you one of those tough-love personal trainers? You know, "I’m ripping the skin off your cheeks so you can grow better skin."

ADELE
Never.
